What does it do?
Scaling & Polishing helps to remove plaque and calculus, which are build up on your teeth and gums. Calculus is a hardened chalk like stone that forms from the minerals in your saliva, bacteria and it's by product and food debris. It is commonly seen in every person, some are more prone to the build up of calculus whereas some are less prone to the formation of these calculus. It is important to remove this build up from time to time, ideally every 6 months to prevent it from causing inflammation to the gums which can spread to the bone and cause bone lost and loosening of your teeth.

It will eventually cause your tooth to become shaky, and eventually the lost of the tooth. Therefore, it is important to clean your teeth at the dentist every 6 months ideally.

Proper Hygiene is also Important
Good oral hygiene is also important to prevent gum disease.
Daily brushing of teeth and flossing after meals is also important to help prevent gum disease. If you have diabetes, make sure proper measures are taken to control your blood sugar level as it will help reduce the inflammation of your gums and bones that support the teeth. Smoking can also mask gum disease, leading to late detection of gum disease and lost of teeth occurs. Smoking also impairs the healing of your gums. Thus, quitting smoking is also an effective measure to help with gum disease.
